Dear MOTIVATION: I’m writing because I feel overwhelmed by the stress and demands of my job. The 12-to-14-hour work days consume my thoughts and energy and leave me with very little time for self-care. I know I need to prioritize my mental health and well-being, but I struggle to find a balance between my responsibilities and taking care of myself. How can I create a healthier routine that allows me to manage work stress while ensuring I don’t neglect my well-being? I want to be my best self at work and in life. — OUT OF BALANCE IN MARYLAND
DEAR OUT OF BALANCE: Finding balance starts with small, intentional changes. See the equation as [Focused energy + Small, Intentional changes + Reduced stress + Embraced grace and joy = Better balance]. Begin by intentionally scheduling “me time” into your week, even if it’s just short breaks for a walk, reflection, eating lunch away from your computer and desk, working out, or reading. Set boundaries at work; learn to say no when necessary. To lessen stress, incorporate mindfulness practices into your daily routine, like meditation, journaling, or yoga. Prioritizing self-care can enhance your innovation at work, creating a positive, productive cycle. Taking care of yourself is not selfish; it improves your ability to meet your responsibilities and maintain a high quality of life. Start small, stay consistent, and give yourself grace. You deserve it!
