Dear MOTIVATION: I cringe at the thought of the office holiday party. Every year, I feel my anxiety increase more and more as the date approaches. Small talk is not my strength, and I often feel out of place among my co-workers, who seem to connect with and welcome one another effortlessly. I want to make a good impression but struggle to start and engage in conversations. Do you have any tips for surviving these events without feeling awkward? I would appreciate any advice on managing my anxiety during this year’s holiday parties, both at work and outside of work. Thank you! — WORK HOLIDAY PARTY ANXIETY IN NORTH CAROLINA

DEAR HOLIDAY PARTY ANXIETY: You’re not alone in feeling this way! Many people share your apprehensions about small talk. Some spend time hiding in the bathroom or sitting alone in the corridor outside of the holiday event. First, in this very moment, close your eyes and breathe in and out slowly. Let’s start by having you prepare a few conversation starters in advance—questions about holiday plans, favorite traditions, positive things about the job, how’s the family, or shared interests can be great icebreakers. Consider arriving a little early to get comfortable with the environment before it’s crowded. Remember that many people focus on their experiences and may seek someone to talk to. So, set small goals for yourself, like engaging in two conversations. Taking small steps can help you reduce anxiety, enjoy the event, and build confidence. Happy holidays!
