Dear MOTIVATION: Life is currently constantly challenging me. Just as I overcome one hurdle, another appears, sometimes multiple troubles or problems at once! Whether it be bills, relationship issues, car troubles, work-related problems, home issues, family challenges, or personal health issues. I often feel exhausted and hopeless, questioning what I might have done in my past to deserve this flood of problems or turmoil. I seek effective ways to cope when everything seems overwhelming and the world feels like it’s crashing down on me. Any advice on how to handle this overwhelming flood of troubles/problems would be greatly appreciated. — OVERWHELMED IN MARYLAND
DEAR OVERWHELMED: Life can feel overwhelming when challenges come at you relentlessly. Remember, it’s not about what you’ve done in the past but how you respond to life experiences. First, take a moment for self-care by meditating, journaling, and getting your emotions and well-being together. Engage in positive activity that brings you joy and helps shift your mind away from troubles for a few minutes or hours. If you’re experiencing anxiety or high levels of stress, consider visiting your primary care doctor for a health and wellness check-up. Surround yourself with supportive friends or family who can actively listen and help you when needed. Set small, achievable goals to help you regain control, clarity, confidence, empowerment, and momentum as you navigate your challenges. Take on and resolve one problem or challenge at a time; do not give up. Adopt a mindset of resilience, hopefulness, and solution-oriented thinking as you move forward. Consider speaking with a professional counselor to explore your feelings and learn effective coping strategies. Your journey may be difficult, but you have the strength and access to resources in your community to overcome it. Take things one day at a time; brighter days are ahead.
